What is Sucrose?
Sucrose is another name for sugar. Sucrose is made out of crystalline powder, but with a sweet taste. Sucrose is famous for making rock candy, what happens is that the sucrose that they use to make rock candy is from water solution, and forms into a string, and that is how they make the rock candy. An interesting fact about sucrose is that it contains 2:1 of oxygen and hydrogen. Sucrose can also make caramel, and in order to do that it needs to melt at 186 °C to form caramel. One cool fact about sucrose is that when sucrose is mixed with sulfuric acid then it forms elemental carbon and the equation for that is C12H22O11 + H2SO4 catalyst --->12 C + 11 H2O, (I thought that was pretty cool).

Sucrose is sugar. It can be used for many things. For example, it is used for when people drink coffee, or other foods that need sugar. Cane sugar is also sucrose and also regular sugar is also known as sucrose. One cool thing that sucrose is made of is Glucose + Fructose. Sucrose is found in many things, like nuts, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and beverages like Gatorade, biscuits and cookies, ice cream and sorbets. The property name is for sucrose is C12H22O11. Basically, Sucrose is the original sugar. First they separate it from cane sugar then they make it into crystal sugar.

What are the pros and cons of adding this to our food? Are there any unintended side affects?
It is a chemical that does not have any odor and has a sweet taste. So sucrose is good because it sweetens food. Sometimes it is replaced with other sweeteners. Sucrose is also very important in a lot of foods. It plays a big part in cookies, ice cream and sorbets. Sucrose has its bad sides too; sucrose is in a lot of junk-food which is unhealthy. And when you eat a lot of junk-food you could get diabetes.

What does the name tell us about the characteristics of the chemical?
The name sucrose has the first two letters of sugar which sucrose is like sugar. And what it tells you is that if it’s like sugar then it is sweet because sugar is sweet.
